Get To Know Me
Hello and welcome to The Healthy Herbivore! I am a plant based nutrition and science junky. Like many others who are on the path to the righteous and healthy, I wasn’t always this way.
About 2 years ago, I was suffering with severe anxiety, and developed a subsequent eating disorder. I went to my family Doctor however I was simply prescribed medication and sent on my way. Nothing was asked about my lifestyle or what I was eating. The medication made me feel horrible and I stopped taking it immediately. I was having anxiety attacks everyday and was losing weight at a rapid rate. I knew my health was in jeopardy but I didn’t know where to turn for help. A friend of mine suggested I see a Holisitic Practitioner. It was at this time I met with Holisitic Nutritionist Joy McCarthy. Joy sat down with me and we discussed my diet and lifestyle and where I could make changes. As soon as I implemented the changes, I felt better. I continued to get better and see Joy for ‘check-ups’ and to discuss where to go next. I made small changes at first. At the time I saw Joy I was consuming at least 3 diet sodas a day, more than 4 soy products a day, and consumed high amounts of various low fat and low calorie processed food products. I cut out soy and the pop and noticed a change right away. Slowly my diet began to evolve into what it is today; high raw and plant based. Around the same time I started seeing Joy, I began learning more about Biochemistry and Physiology at school. I started realizing food is much more important than I had once thought. Every morsel, every molecule, effects the body in profound ways. I began heavily researching food and nutrition. I was studying Human Biology at University of Toronto with the hopes to get into Medical School. I wrote my MCATs however, the more I learned about food and it’s healing properties the more I wanted to promote Holisitic Nutrition. I changed courses and began taking more nutrition classes at school. In addition to studying Human Biology, I also have my certificate in Plant Based Nutrition. My goal is to help others on their way to a healthy and positive lifestyle. Based on my experience, and the experience of others, I know food as medicine works.
Another strong component I advocate as medicine is Yoga. Two years ago I started practicing to combat my anxiety. I have developed a strong practice which has allowed me to approach every day with a clear and present mind.
Thank you for reading and I hope you find something positive you can take away from the blog

Very inspiring story, Candice. It’s amazing what good nutrition can do. Will take a page from your book and try to get back to a more regular yoga practice to be grounded and centered.
Thanks Marisa
Yes regular practice is so good. In fact I notice it not only in my body but my mind as well when I start to slack off!
